Indie rock group The Walkmen somewhat defy their so-called "indie" branding. With with heavy influences from Bob Dylan and The Kinks, The Walkmen combine emotional lyrics with a throwback to classic rock roots, which doesn't exactly fit into the "indie rock" box - especially since the band crosses genres with songs featured films such as "Spider-Man 3" and television cult classic "The O.C."
Reggae-hip-hop band Funkatron defines its name as "the musical creation and expression of five individuals' hearts and souls."
Their tour bus caught on fire, they were dropped from a record deal, and two of the three original members of the band are out. While this might have spelled the end for many bands, The Pink Spiders pushed on. With their latest album, "Sweat It Out," hitting stores Sept. 23, The Pink Spiders will continue to roll with the punches.
For those strolling past the dimly lit bar windows of 1982 on a Monday night, be prepared to witness something other than locals watering down their worries. Instead, bystanders might find Gainesville's rock star wannabes imitating the greats on popular music video games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
Rock is not dead. We can thank all of the recent band reunions for attempting to repeat what was once good. A flip through the pages of Rolling Stone magazine reveals more and more bands coming out of retirement.

Why are we still mentioning Andrew Meyer in the Alligator? Sure, he gave you plenty of stories, but it's over.
I'm writing in response to Colleen Shea's Friday column about fitness. I can't believe someone is actually complaining about fit people working out at the gym. Um, hello? How do you think they got those amazing bodies? And no, not everyone at the gym looks like bodybuilders, but at least they're trying to stay fit. If you're so insecure that you can't work out with other people, stay home.
