Two UF students reached out to the Boys & Girls Club of Alachua County to make a big difference in a small way.
Frank Goodyear, the associate curator of photographs at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, spoke at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art on Thursday about Abraham Lincoln’s use of photography to communicate with the American people at a critical time in history.
Abraham Lincoln’s image will be immortalized in an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in a few years, but UF students will get a chance to see some of his powerful photographs early.
Students in Beaty Towers East might not want to get too comfortable.
UF students in the Design Innovation course will participate in the Make a Difference project throughout the next two months. The project was introduced to the students Tuesday and encourages them to use their skills in small ways to make big differences, said Margaret Portillo, a professor and chairwoman for the Department of Interior Design.
Kids4Kids Florida Charities Inc. hosted the Fifth Annual Triathlon and Fun Run, which benefitted Shands Children’s Hospital, Child Advocacy Center and One Room School House. Children ages 4 to 18 could participate in the events, which were held at Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club.
The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Benjamin Hebblethwaite, who works in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, $240,804 — the second-largest award it gave in Florida this year.
