Florida set to open tough week with matchup against Tennessee

Maybe it was the long bus ride. Maybe it was the Mississippi State defense. Maybe it was the absence of two of its best players.
The Gators have scored 10 goals in their past two games after going on a six-game scoreless streak earlier in the year. Florida is riding the momentum for the moment, but a certain team from Starkville, Mississippi, may just be the test UF needs to entirely confirm that reports of the Gators’ demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Florida’s offense is making up for lost time.
Lais Araujo may have been the player to snap the Gators’ scoreless streak against Vanderbilt, but a heartbreaking loss left her unsatisfied with the feat.
Coach Becky Burleigh insisted that her Florida team would be starting with a clean slate as it headed into SEC play before its match against Vanderbilt on Sunday.
The net behind Vanderbilt goalkeeper Taiana Tolleson gently swished. The interlacing nylon in front of Florida’s offense hadn’t so much as shivered in its previous 677 minutes and 14 seconds.
UF soccer suffered its fifth straight shutout on Friday night in Tallahassee after which coach Becky Burleigh remarked that the “universe” would eventually reward her team.
Midfielder Parker Roberts said ahead of tonight’s game that “defense wins championships.” As UF has now remained entirely scoreless since August 19th, the team’s offense is still struggling to discover how to merely win matches.
There are few college showdowns that evoke passion and ire like the longstanding conflict between Florida and Florida State.

The Gators, however, didn’t fare any better on the scoreboard. Lackluster offense and stellar defense were the only two takeaways in a scoreless draw between the Bruins (2-1-0) and the Gators (2-1-2) on Friday.
With zero goals in its last two games, Florida’s soccer team has been hit with a major offensive lull. With the No. 2 team in the nation heading to Gainesville on today, the Gators (2-2) will have to play to their full potential if they’re going to end their scoring drought against the Bruins (2-0).
“The Hangover” could take a lesson from the way Florida struggled last weekend.
It wasn’t until the 103rd minute that Oklahoma State’s Marlo Zoller hit the back of the net from 14 yards out and put the hopes of a Gator victory to rest.
Two games in three days is not typically an ideal scenario for a soccer team.
“They were a probably a little better than we were expecting.”
UF coach Becky Burleigh isn’t fooled by Ohio State’s record.
Freshman Cassidy Lindley has propelled the Gators during their two-game winning streak to start the season. The rookie midfielder was credited with an assist on Florida’s first goal in its 2-1 win against Washington in the season opener.
