Stay safe during Thanksgiving

I just wanted to tell all UF students to have a good Thanksgiving, but even more importantly, to return to UF alive next week. Please don't do anything stupid. There have already been too many young, potentially great lives lost this semester. Be safe.

Salary could be better spent

In light of the fact that funding for many UF departments is being cut to the bone, UF professors are underpaid and overworked, state funding for higher education is being cut every year and our economy is, by many estimates, on the verge of entering a recession, isn't it good to know that we here at UF have one of the highest-paid university presidents in the country?

Don't perpetuate stereotypes, Alligator

I found myself a little surprised after reading "Overheard in Gainesville" in Thursday's Avenue section. The final quote, by a "sorostitute," would have little apparent humor apart from the girl presumably being in a sorority. Some people might find it funny, but why not throw in hilarious quotes about other people?

Gonzales not a controversial speaker

Why are we paying ,40,000 to hear Alberto Gonzales speak? Accent claims it is bringing another "controversial speaker" like Janet Reno. Reno was controversial because of policy in the Elian Gonzalez and Waco raids. Alberto Gonzales is controversial because of his alleged illegal actions.

Phones prevent us from communicating

A very noticeable trend in campus life is the overwhelming presence of students attached to their cell phones or encapsulated by the earbuds of their iPods. Not only does this trend essentially shut us off from the world that is within our gaze, but it nearly destroys any attempts one student may have at communicating with another.

Accent speech a waste of student money

As an alumnus of UF and the Alligator, I was disappointed to learn ,40,000 of student money would be going to pay former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to speak at UF. What on Earth could he have to share with students? What valuable insights will he offer, given how little he remembers of his own tenure?

Students should get to enter speech first

I attended Nye's speech Tuesday night, and while I thought his program was wonderful, the venue left something to be desired - namely, the choice to open the Phillips Center to the general public rather than to students only. The massive crowd of parents and young children who showed up prevented many students from seeing Nye in person and required throngs of students to watch the speech outside on a projector.
