Serbian conflict not religious in nature

As a Kosovan-Albanian who has lived through the horrors of the Serbian occupation of Kosovo in the '90s, I am very disappointed that Mr. Jurich misled the Gainesville community Friday by suggesting that the U.S., United Kingdom, France, Germany and other western countries are sponsoring terrorism by supporting Kosovo's independence.

Display allowed students to see truth

In Thursday's editorial, the author wrote that the anti-abortion display set up by the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform "was, at best, insensitive and tasteless." Is it the display or the result depicted that is insensitive? How does this author have the audacity to call this group insensitive? They are giving a voice to those who can't speak.

Pageant winners chosen by appearances

I was saddened to read Matt Meltzer's response to the Alligator's take on the Miss UF pageant in yesterday's paper. How does "well-rounded" mean hot? Look, it's great that these girls are judged on more than just beauty - but that's the whole point. It doesn't matter if you've solved the energy crisis or can give a lecture on string theory. If you aren't pretty, no one cares. You don't qualify, you aren't a good role model and you don't get any money.

U.S. should not have recognized Kosovo

I am Serbian-American, but I speak as an American, not as a Serb, when I say America and other Western nations have made a grave mistake supporting the independence of Kosovo. Not only is Kosovo illegal under international law, but the U.S. is also helping establish a dangerous Islamic state in the heart of Europe as we fight the war on terror.

Guns on campus would allow self-defense

I would like to thank the Alligator for the marvelous bit of backward thinking displayed in Monday's editorial. First after Virginia Tech and now after Northern Illinois University, I have read this paper's disparaging remarks toward those who would take responsibility for their own safety by carrying the means to defend themselves.

Clinton campaign tactics are deplorable

I am growing ever more disgusted with Hillary Clinton's campaign. Sen. Clinton made a clear promise to respect the Democratic National Convention rules that refused to seat delegates from Florida and Michigan, but now her campaign wants to consider lifting the ban after the fact.

Guns on campus would deter violence

When I heard UF's response to the NIU shooting, I had about the same response as the Editorial Board. A shooting can take less than a minute, so what will a text message system accomplish? By the time the administration is even notified to send out a text alert the shooting will probably be over.

Wasteful spending plagues SG

Last Friday, Lacey Logsdon alleged that Mark McShera was being deceitful when he suggested there was wasteful spending in Student Government. As a former treasurer candidate with the Pants Party, and after careful examination of the budget, I was appalled at the wasteful spending.

NIU tragedy deserved front-page spot

I was shocked on Friday when I saw that the Alligator didn't seem to think that the shooting at Northern Illinois University was front-page news. Instead, we were treated to headlines about online voting, President Machen discussing money issues, a robber confessing to police and a huge picture of people holding hands.

Advocacy was not student protest

Recent articles about student activism, including Kim Wilmath's "SDS gives heart to Machen," have used the term "student protesters" to describe any form of advocacy on campus. Activism is not always protesting, and I think the use of this term either shows oversight or a biased opinion on the part of Alligator reporters.
