McCain’s tactics miss the point
By Francisco Sotomayor | Oct. 19, 2008Sen. John McCain, please stop the nonsense. I'm tired of hearing about Ayers and ACORN. The roller-coaster economy needs your attention.

Presidential candidates should be very clear on every issue, especially national security. For example, President Ronald Reagan emphasized the role of a strong military in keeping the peace. His policy eventually resulted in our Cold War victory and helped cause the breakdown of the Soviet Union.
I urge everyone to think twice before getting this year's flu vaccine. While getting a little jab in the arm and saving yourself from illness sounds like a great deal, it's really not.
On Friday, Kevin Homrich-Micocci's column was largely dedicated to an informative summary of the poor decisions, mishaps, lies and conspiracies recently perpetrated by the UF administration and its lapdogs in the Gator Party. However, he also somehow found reason to praise the Gator Party's ability to "get something done" and criticize the Orange and Blue Party's "impotence."
The new online ticket system is infinitely better than the old phone system.
I arrived at Tuesday night's first meeting of the new Student Senate apprehensive of what was to come. I was afraid of the ugliness that would follow when the gloves came off in the start of a new Senate session.
I found it strange that in an editorial that was otherwise touting the exact same principles as the Students for a Democratic Society-supported referendum against installing hand scanners at UF's gyms, there was need to chastise SDS for their "scanners-signal-the-apocalypse mentality."

In response to Chairman Bryan Griffin's red-baiting comment that he doesn't want any "crazy socialist hippies" to control UF's money: Those are just the kind of people I trust with my money. Just look at what the greedy, free-market-loving capitalists did with it on Wall Street.
I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the Alligator this year.
Many people dislike politics because it sometimes seems that people choose to launch personal attacks on one another. It is a shame that politics are being treated the same way on the UF campus.
After reading Monday's article and editorial about the hand scanner referendum, I feel a few clarifications are in order.
To UF students responding to Jamie Edgerly's letter regarding her opposition to gay marriage that ran in Monday's Alligator:
I'm sick and tired of the notion that America was founded on Christian values. In fact, the Constitution has clauses that attempt to bar any religion from entering government. Before you fall back on "In God We Trust," you should know that the phrase did not become the nation's official motto until an act of Congress in 1956.
