Machen/s ‘threat/ ludicrous

UF President Bernie Machen has asked the city of Jacksonville to cut down the number of alcohol vendor licenses it issues, curb the ability of private businesses with legally obtained liquor licenses to serve and create more safety zones for students… and foot the bill for all of it.

UF should keep station

While I understand that our slowing economy forces even UF to make difficult cutbacks, I do not understand why the leaders of our largest employer in Alachua County have to behave like any other arrogant, big-city CEOs when considering the fates of employees. I am particularly upset about the recent treatment of the staff of WRUF.

Fans need to keep themselves in check

I went to the NBA Finals in Orlando this past weekend, and a fistfight almost erupted in my section after a group of rowdy, young Magic fans bombarded the Lakers fans in front of me with an endless chant of "LA sucks!" First of all, Orlando fans, people who live in prefab, cookie-cutter houses, should not throw stones. But more importantly, where on earth do you get the idea that your basketball team being up 10 points has anything to do with your city being any better than anyone else's?

Student Senators must improve attitude

As a senator from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, I was personally offended and appalled at the demeanor presented by the Orange and Blue party Senators concerning Student Government's bill in last Tuesday's senate meeting. Such disrespectful attitudes and comments directed toward my constituents by the Orange and Blue party have compelled me to write and inform the public of the situation.

UF budget must include stimulus money

I know many of us are breathing a sigh of relief because the worst of the budget cuts facing the University of Florida a few months ago have not come to pass. Unfortunately, 67 people are still facing the possible loss of their jobs - many of them are the underappreciated staffers who keep the school running.

Obama’s tax practices deserve critique

I found the title of Friday's opinion column titled "Bitter Teabaggers Ignored President's Package, Tax Cuts" to be very ironic. Jake Miller does make an extremely valid point about the frightening number of people ignoring the real implications of the president's package and tax cuts.

Congrats to Karma Cream owners

In response to the Alligator's Tuesday article "Ice cream shop opens today, will offer 11 vegan flavors," I would like to congratulate Payal Patel and Kyle Fick on the opening of the Karma Cream ice cream shop. By staying true to their ethical beliefs and featuring nearly a dozen delicious dairy-free choices, they are doing a great service to the community by offering diners healthier, more eco-friendly options. In addition to helping students keep off that pesky "freshman 15," by picking the vegan Peach Cobbler, Dreamsicle or any of the other dairy-free dishes, consumers won't be contributing to a lifetime of misery for a cow on a dairy farm.
