Reader questions qualities of real leaders

In Tuesday’s Alligator, the Editorial Board took a strong stance in favor of adding more Gainesville utility providers, finally bringing the free market to our power and water and working to stop the city-controlled socialists at GRU. Frankly, I couldn’t agree more.
When the Florida Department of Law Enforcement report cleared the five officers involved in the Kofi Adu-Brempong shooting we were upset but believed an internal investigation might bring about some disciplinary action. Now it seems UPD has reinstated all but one of the officers involved in the shooting with no actions taken against them. Maybe there was a slap on the wrist for mishandling the situation, but we don’t know.
As a Christian, I follow a basic commandment: Love one another as you love yourself. This does not mean love your Christian neighbors, and bully all others. It definitely does not mean that it is acceptable, in the name of Christ, to persecute those of another faith. On Sept. 11, The Dove World Outreach Center is planning an “International Burn a Quran Day.” They describe Islam as “a religion of the devil” and have been mobilizing using Facebook and YouTube to persuade others to their cause.
I respectfully disagree with Jon Roosenraad's column, "UF journalism students deserve teachers with experience in field." Finding a candidate for the position of Executive Producer/Managing Editor 21st Century News Lab, in the College of Journalism and Communications, who has an advanced degree and professional experience is both possible and necessary. There are several professors in our college, and other ‘professional leaning' colleges that have both. Although neither requirement is a guarantee of finding the professor with the perfect fit, having both provides the students and the communications community with the potential for maintaining industry standards while perpetuating growth. Too often industry applicants, with and without advanced degrees, think that all they have to do is go to class and tell war stories. I know, I was one of those hires with both 10 years of industry experience and advanced degrees. I learned quickly that students need more than learning the industry's approach to a problem or situation. When forward thinking is required, as is certainly the case in the journalism communications industry today, then the best candidate is the holder of both professional experience and advanced degrees. Although I am not on the selection committee, hiring someone with the best credentials in both areas is essential. I trust the committee and the dean will make the correct decision.
I am disappointed to have read this week that Florida is backing the Arizona immigration law that basically allows racial profiling.
If you are a student and need to go to the neurology, oncology, or any of the other important ‘ology clinics at Shands Medical Plaza: beware.
Milk, and all other dairy products that we enjoy so much, does not come without sacrifice. The only way a dairy cow can produce milk is by giving birth to a calf.
Matthew Maher, a 26-year-old former professional soccer player and Temple University graduate, is now in prison for the next five and a half years for killing an innocent man while driving drunk on March 7, 2009.
Although I’m very happy to see the Alligator following up on the drinking ordinance, I’d like to clarify a few confusions. I said that I was going to try to work with the UF College Democrats and members of Student Government to see if we could get bipartisan support in opposing the ordinance, but I haven’t gotten the confirmed support yet. I wanted to clear this up because, as of now, these organizations are in no way associated with this opposition.
I am the agriculture teacher at a small rural school in Arkansas, and our school recently underwent a consolidation involving three schools into one school district.
It is very sad how Student Government Productions runs its business. It brings an artist in for such large amounts of money that the people who want to see that artist can’t afford it.
Alligator,
The politics of the Dove World Outreach Center has left a vile mark on the Gainesville community. The Center’s recent protest against the Islamic Center of Gainesville, 1010 W University Ave., sent a clear message of hate, bigotry and sheer ignorance of the Islamic faith and the Muslim communities that work, study and raise families in Gainesville. Many laudable public events in Gainesville have encouraged and showcased interfaith understanding, such as the Children of Abraham Seder held last year. However, the Monday protest was a divisive occurrence demonstrating the need for community action.
I recall people on Turlington Plaza protesting UF parking. I am writing to encourage their demonstrations. I recently received a parking citation for my scooter. While I can say the citation (for sidewalk parking) is incorrect, I would also like to point out that I am the type of person who never breaks rules, no matter what. But through this ticket-receiving process I have witnessed with my own eyes how evil the UFPD parking enforcement is.
Your article about the federal tan tax addressed the concerns of small-business owners, but it did not convey the compelling, irrefutable scientific evidence that shows the use of indoor tanning beds can increase the risk for skin cancer.
I was disappointed that Thursday’s article about free Wi-Fi at Starbucks failed to mention an important local coffee shop: Pascal’s.
Dear Mayor and City Commissioners,
The Laboratory is a hub for some of the most intellectual, artistic, creative and dynamic minds I’ve ever encountered. I spend my entire time debating, discussing and theorizing with the many patrons that come. It is my political training ground.
In today’s editorial, the ‘editor’ referred to the Laboratory as a ‘bar on University,’ in a seeming attempt to discredit Ozzie Angulo. The Laboratory is a cafe. We do not sell liquor, and the majority of my business is food sales.
