Captain Brian Helmerson of the Gainesville Police Department moves Thursday evening to separate protesters on the site of a monument on the corner of West University Avenue and North Main Street dedicated to fallen Confederate soldiers. One group called for the removal of the monument while the other called for the monument to stay.

Confederate Controversy

Based on the Confederate statue on the corner of Main Street and East University Avenue on Thursday, a crowd of protesters held signs that read, “End white supremacy” and “Tear it down.”

Flags aside, we have freedom

On Thursday, Gainesville actively joined the national controversy surrounding the Confederate flag. Protesters came out to speak for and against the status of a statue depicting a confederate soldier, which has the words “In memory of the Confederate dead” inscribed along its pedestal.

UF unveils Media Days lineup

Defensive end Jonathan Bullard, defensive back Vernon Hargreaves and wide receiver Brandon Powell will represent Florida at the Southeastern Conference Football Media Days, the school announced Wednesday.
