The brief and turbulent tenure of former UF President Ben Sasse roiled the university in controversy and left campus politics in a near-constant state of flux. Now, the monthslong search for Sasse’s successor is underway.
UF officially began its search for a new president, a process expected to stretch over several months and involve intense scrutiny from stakeholders. The next president will step into the role during a time of strict oversight from the UF Board of Trustees.
The UF Board of Trustees, who govern the state’s flagship university, put in place policies Thursday that bolster their authority over key decisions on top-level hiring decisions. The new measures include strict rules that could allow for a cut on spending out of the president’s office.
Five are UF faculty members, two are members of the Florida Board of Governors and three are members of the UF Board of Trustees. There is one student body representative.
The disastrous and short-lived Sasse presidency came as no surprise to the majority of students, faculty and campus workers who opposed his appointment for its lack of transparency and his lack of qualification.
In an Aug. 16 X post responding to a previous Alligator report on his expenditures, Sasse wrote, “It is my understanding that the Audit Committee of our board did its work thoroughly and without any findings of concern.”
Among 12 of Sasse’s staff original hires, five of whom live out-of-state, only two remain on UF President cabinet website. James Wegmann and Dan Dillon currently serve as the Vice President for Communications and the Vice President for Marketing and the Senior Advisor, respectively.
