Many maintain that Sen. Bernie Sanders has low odds of becoming the presidential candidate for the Democratic Party, much less winning a general election. In spite of this, his platform and voting records are, by a considerable margin, the most thought-out and useful for women of any presidential candidate; many of his proposals are already in place in other developed democracies. The best example of this is paid family leave: Sanders has a clear way of paying for it, while Hillary Clinton’s plan is vague and doesn’t clearly outline who would foot the bill. It would be hard for Clinton to compete on policy alone. Thus far, her main edge over Sanders has stemmed from her name recognition and influence within the Democratic Party. A former advisor to President Obama, David Axelrod, even called the initial harsh penalties lobbied against Sanders for having access to Clinton’s voter data as “putting finger on scale” for Clinton.

Let’s go back to Sept. 8, 2011. The U.S. unemployment rate is around 9 percent and President Barack Obama has called a joint session of Congress to address the nation on what the U.S. government is going to do to improve the economy. Millions of Americans at the time were struggling to make ends meet while unemployed, scraping together what they had just to make it by. That night, Obama had the answer to the fear and struggle of many Americans. But this wasn’t the priority for most: That night it was Thursday Night Football.

With Thanksgiving now in the rearview mirror and the weight of finals looming heavily over us all, we students will likely degrade into a cluster of anxiety as opposed to reminiscing fondly on this past holiday.

About two weeks ago, America was hit with the horrifying story of Jeremy Mardis. Mardis was a 6-year-old boy who was shot to death by two police officers while riding in the car with his father in Marksville, Louisiana. Mardis’ father, Chris Few, had no outstanding warrants for his arrest, nor was there a gun found in Few’s vehicle. This information begs the question: Why were shots fired by police in the first place?

This past October, we witnessed a stark readjustment of the U.S. military agenda in the Middle East. On Oct. 30, President Obama announced the U.S. military would, in fact, be putting "boots on the ground" in Syria. Earlier on Oct. 15, the Obama administration announced an extension of the timeline for U.S. military presence in Afghanistan. Through most of next year, 9,800 troops will continue operations, and by Jan. 2017, a residual force of 5,500 troops will remain indefinitely.

Now, whether you are republican, democrat or independent you probably have accused a president of lying once or twice. No matter which president you have had an angry tirade against I will give you justification for any such rant, provided it is in the form of accusing him of lying. However, it is not in the form that you are expecting.

Following the Sept. 11 attacks, the U.S. firmly and confidently planted itself in the Middle East beginning with Afghanistan in late 2001. At the time, there were few who would have publicly disagreed with this course of action, but then again, how could they? The nation had just been attacked on a scale that had never been seen before and has yet to be matched. We were hurt, and, perhaps more than anything else, we were scared. Not to go after the men who had hurt us so deeply would have been a decision rooted in fear and cowardice.

Somehow, these names don’t fit together: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Donald Trump. However, many polls measuring the presidential race predict Trump will soon be sitting alongside some of the greatest leaders who built this very country. So, as hundreds of thousands of Americans visit Mount Vernon and Monticello today, I have to ask: Will we be taking our children to visit the Trump Tower?
