Five thousand people, $5,000 and 140,000 balloons represent this year’s goals for The World’s Largest Water Balloon Fight Against Breast Cancer.
Hosted by the Inter-Residence Hall Association, the event, which is in its second year, is set to take place Saturday at 1 p.m. on Flavet Field.
“It’s definitely going to be a whole lot more successful this year than last year,” said Sheldon Clark, marketing director for the event. “And last year was pretty successful.”
Last year, 2,500 people raised $2,000 and hurled 65,000 water balloons at each other.
Students raise money for the event by tabling, selling carnations for Valentine’s Day and encouraging people to bring donations to the balloon fight.
“Being a female in general, and maybe having to deal with breast cancer firsthand one day, makes me relate well to the cause,” said Natalie Hyman, the event director.
Proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the North Florida chapter of the American Cancer Society.
The balloons are stored at the Keys Residential Complex.
Volunteers will be there today filling balloons for the fight.
