'Making the Band' performs for UF students

As soon as the doors flung open, girls pushed each other as they flooded the Reitz Union Auditorium, yelling things like "I'm here for Willie" and "Thank God, we've got good seats."

All the commotion was for members of MTV's "Making the Band 4," who broke a few hearts at their appearance Monday night.

The band Day26 rose to stardom under the wing of Sean "Diddy" Combs after members were hand picked during MTV's popular show "Making the Band 4."

Crooning their way into the hearts of millions, Brian Andrews, Mike McCluney, Qwanell Moseley, Willie Taylor and Robert Curry had UF students on their feet, taking pictures and dancing along to the ballads blaring from the speakers.

Student Government sponsored the event, which included a viewing of a new episode of the show, a meet and greet and an a capella performance for a crowd of about 500.

Day 26 requested to come to UF as part of its southeast tour of college campuses in order to reach its target audience.

SG paid $200 for the auditorium rental and refreshments.

High-pitched screams made it nearly impossible to hear and camera flashes made it hard to see, but the band members weren't deterred from sitting in the crowd and giving out dozens of hugs to overzealous fans.

When the audio for the television episode didn't work for about 20 minutes, fans got a little rowdy and rushed into the aisles to speak to their favorite band member.

Portia Fremgen, a business management freshman, enjoyed the performance but said her experience was somewhat detracted from by the fans.

"Seriously, it was just a whole bunch of crazy girls," she said. "They didn't know when to sit down."
