Gators football coach Urban Meyer announced Tuesday that starter Carlos Dunlap will not play in Saturday’s Southeastern Conference championship game after he was arrested for DUI early Tuesday morning.
Dunlap was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. when Gainesville police observed his car stopped at a green light after a driver reported a reckless driver, according to GPD spokesman Keith Kameg.
Upon arrival, officer Robert Rogers saw a 2000 red Chrysler stopped at Southwest 34th Street and Southwest Second Avenue and approached the vehicle after watching it remain immobile through several light cycles.
Dunlap appeared to be asleep, and Rogers shouted at him to wake up through a crack in the window, Kameg said. Dunlap appeared to wake up but kept nodding off.
Rogers then managed to wake Dunlap enough to coax him out of the car, although he remained groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to directions, Kameg said.
After failing field sobriety tests, Dunlap refused a breathalyzer test and was arrested and taken to the Alachua County Jail.
“I haven’t thought about anything other than [the fact that] the word ‘stunning’ is probably appropriate,” Meyer said.
“Carlos obviously made a very poor decision,” he said.
This is the first offense for the star defensive end.
