Junior Alexandra Cercone swings during Florida’s 7-0 victory against Baylor on Feb. 2 at Linder Stadium.

Beginning today, the Florida women’s tennis team will be splitting up to participate in two separate events.

Alex Cerone and Sofie Oyen will be competing at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, a four-day event being held in Flushing, N.Y. Both received an at-large bid in the national event. On Friday, the rest of the Gators will be competing in the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, a three-day event held in Lakewood Ranch.

This will be is Oyen's second consecutive season in which she participated in this event. Cercone stated that she’s excited about New York, the welcome ceremony, the banquet, seeing her friends from other schools and seeing the inside of Arthur Ashe stadium.

“I was thrilled when I found out that I was going to New York,” she said.

Said coach Roland Thornqvist: “The field down south might be tougher than it’s ever been.”

Olivia Janowicz, Kourtney Keegan, Brianna Morgan, Stefani Stojic and Belinda Woolcock will represent the Florida at the Classic.

With the preseason nearing its end, Thornqvist wants his team to take advantage of the upcoming school breaks.

“Some players take off Christmas,” he said, “but if our players want to do well, they must take ownership over Christmas.”
