Student Senate President Jordan Johnson announced Wednesday that he will be running for Student Government president this spring.
Although Johnson, who represents District B, has represented the Gator Party in the past, this election he has chosen to run on a new party's ticket: the Unite Party.
"The Unite Party was created to bring people together," he said. "It offers students something different."
Johnson, a UF economics senior, has been involved with SG for two years.
He served as the chairman of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, overseeing SG's $13.7 million budget, before becoming Senate president.
Johnson said he decided to run because he believes it is time for a positive change.
"There has been a major division in Student Government between parties and politics," he said. "It's time to unite and to work toward bipartisanship."
Johnson said students care about effectiveness and results, not petty bickering between student political parties.
"In order to implement change, it must start from the top," he said.
He has yet to choose a vice president and treasurer as his running mates.
He plans to start interviews next week.
Johnson believes that he has a good chance of winning the upcoming election.
"Absolutely," he said. "But I don't expect to win without working hard."
