While the white-handed gibbon screams to mark its territory, visitors at the zoo may give it something else to scream about Wednesday.
The SFCC Teaching Zoo's 13th annual "Boo at the Zoo" event will take place on Halloween from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., providing costumed activities for children and the young at heart.
Jack Brown, director of the SFCC Teaching Zoo, said the event is a big trick-or-treat adventure for kids and their parents. The event is designed for toddlers all the way up to middle school students to come an enjoy a safe Halloween, he said.
The zoo will be divided into four themed areas, Brown said. This year's themes are Lost Safari, Monster's Bash, Storybook or Fairytale Villains and Crazy Carnival.
SFCC students will be located in each of the four areas dressed in a costume that goes with the area they are in. About 20 students will be in each area.
Rene Ryan, who is a student in the Zoo Animal Technology Program at SFCC, will be dressed as a tourist being eaten by an alligator after having fallen out of a canoe.
While the zoo will be decorated in the spirit of Halloween, the aim is not to frighten, Brown said.
"We don't want to scare the daylights out of some little toddler," he said. "We want them to have fun."
