Hot rod owners show off cars for heroes

Your car must be 30 years old or older to ride.

Ride through Gainesville, that is, during the second annual Hot Rodding for Heroes car show this weekend.

The event starts this afternoon with a golf tournament at the Haile Plantation Golf and Country Club, located at 9905 SW 44th Ave. On Saturday, participants will drive their antique cars from Santa Fe College to the Haile Plantation Village Center. The tour will end with a car show.

Adam Brown, board member for the event, said 300 cars participated in last year’s event.

He said he expects this year’s number of participants to go up.

“As with most car events,” he said, “most people just kind of decide the day or night before.”

The event’s goal is to raise money for the Veterans Bridge Scholarship, Brown said.

The award will go to veterans enrolling at either SFC or UF after returning home from overseas and receiving the GI Bill.

“When you separate from the military and start school, it’s obviously a huge change of life,” said Danny Makowsky, vice president of the SFC Collegiate Veterans Society.

Watching the show is free to the public. About 10,000 people attended last year.

“If you don’t own a classic car, you can still come out and enjoy it,” Brown said.
