Varsity football players auctioned for charity game

Step right up and enjoy your No. 15 minute of fame.

On Tuesday night, about 650 people crowded Touchdown Terrace in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in support of the second annual "First and 15" powder puff football tournament draft event.

For a $5 entrance fee, guests clad in cocktail attire enjoyed food, a DJ and speeches given by Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer.

Varsity football players were auctioned off as coaches to 22 organizations on campus, both Greek and non-Greek, that have created teams for the "First and 15" powder puff tournament to be held Friday night.

Delta Delta Delta sorority was the first to choose, picking the Pouncey twins to be their coaches.

The championship game will be played in the Swamp immediately preceding the Orange and Blue Game on Saturday and will be filmed by ESPN.

The overall fundraising goal for the tournament, which is sponsored by Student Government, totals about $250,000.

This money will go to Uncle Dick's Home, an orphanage in the Philippines, as well as the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Shands Hospital.

Food for the event was donated by 101 Cantina. Social Studies Promotions donated their time and a DJ to the event.

"I've never done much coaching, but it's a lot of fun, and we raise a lot of money that we know is going to a good cause," said quarterback John Brantley, who coached the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority in last year's tournament.
