The skies of Alachua were predicted to rain with Easter eggs, but 15 mph winds changed the forecast.

About 2,000 people gathered for Egg Drop Alachua on Saturday at the future location of Christ Central Alachua church, located on Cellon Creek Boulevard, where plastic eggs were scheduled to drop from a hot-air balloon for children to find along with 10,000 eggs already scattered on the ground.

But there was one problem: The hot-air balloon couldn’t fly in 15 mph winds.

After 40 minutes of attempting to get the balloon in the air, Mark Johns, lead pastor of Christ Central Alachua, improvised by starting a countdown himself, and the hunt began.

It took the children 15 minutes to find all the eggs.

Though the egg drop didn’t go as planned, the event had different activity stations for the children such as face painting and bounce houses.

The Easter bunny even made an early visit.

Johns said he wanted to provide a safe, fun and entertaining environment for families to spend their Saturday afternoon.

Johns said he  hopes to drop the eggs from helicopters next year.
