Students write love letters of encouragement for finals week

Students wrote “Keep pushing through” and “Take it one day at a time” on pink, purple and green construction paper Friday.

The notes were part of Campus Cursive’s second love letter-writing party on Turlington Plaza. The UF group will pass the notes out to students during finals week.

The event was planned around finals week because students are more stressed and need encouragement, said Allie Seelig, a co-president of Campus Cursive.

They collected about 70 notes from 50 students, about half of what they hoped for, due to wind, she said.

“We had a really great response and wanted to keep it going,” the UF biology junior said. “A lot of times people are surprised by what we do and find it really encouraging to be on either end, writing or receiving the notes.”

The group decided to hold the event last year after a student’s suicide, the 20-year-old said. The group wanted to show UF students others cared about them.

“It can kind of be an eye-opening experience for some people to have this practice of considering other people,” Seelig said.

Regan Hamrick, a UF health science sophomore, said even a small dose of encouragement will help students through the stress of finals week.

She wrote a letter last year and came back Friday.

“I just wrote ‘you’re almost there, you’re almost done,’ because that’s the encouragement I need,” the 19-year-old said.
