A lot can be accomplished in six weeks. If you are a registered Democrat living in Florida, then you'd better hope that about 4 percent of a state's popular vote will change in a month and a half.
A recent poll shows Sen. John McCain has taken the frontrunner reigns in the Sunshine State. Looks like the old man has dusted off his gloves and officially started swinging at his much-hyped opponent. Could it be that the media vacuum that is Sen. Barack Obama's campaign is actually beginning to fizzle? We doubt it.
If we were to guess, we'd blame McCain's running mate Sarah Palin for being the only person who has spent less time on the national political scene than Obama. Her assuming the limelight seems natural because she's a new piece of political meat for newshounds to overanalyze and eventually tear to shreds.
We'd say it's also pretty safe to think that by not counting Florida's votes in the primaries, Sen. Hillary Clinton's supporters are still pissed and refuse to vote Obama. He has to overcome dissent within his own party to win electoral votes from key states like Florida, and we don't think he can do it without Hillary's PUMAs pretending to be on his side.
We think the Democratic Party needs a pep talk, but we certainly aren't going to give them one. They've shot themselves in the foot, so they need to organize a quick, strong recovery.
With about six weeks left before the polls open, both parties need to tread cautiously. Any slipup could vault one candidate ahead of the other, which is absurd considering both men are saying the same things to attract moderate votes.
Now, all we have to do is sit back and watch the fight get dirty.
