A UF student ended his three-day weekend by getting arrested for pointing a rifle at a moving car.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was driving west on Northwest Third Avenue at 2:55 a.m. Monday when he or she saw a man standing on the side of the road. Kevin M. Herzog, 21, was gripping a brown .22-caliber Remington rifle in his left hand, according to an arrest report.
The victim kept driving forward, and Herzog retreated to the front yard at 1222 NW Third Ave. He hid behind some bushes, peeked his rifle above the shrubbery and aimed the muzzle at the car, according to police.
The victim slammed on the brakes, put the car in reverse and drove away before calling police. After his arrest, Herzog said he was carrying the rifle because he had been robbed earlier. He didn't mean to point it at the car, he said.
Herzog was still in the Alachua County Jail on Monday evening, being held on a $50,000 bail. He has no prior charges in Gainesville.
The house where Herzog was hiding with the rifle is owned by Henry and Karleen Gremillion, according to the Alachua County Property Appraiser. They did not return a call from the Alligator seeking comment.
