A Wal-Mart cashier was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stealing more than $1,700 from the Gainesville store on Northwest 13th Street from June through July.
Aretina Williams, 20, put 33-cent price tags on 42 items, some of which should have been priced between $90 to almost $170, according to a Gainesville Police report.
Williams either charged items at the reduced price or voided them altogether before giving the merchandise to visiting friends to hide in their bags.
Items included clothing, sheets, towels, a DVD player, cameras, a Lego set, a TI calculator and various other purchases.
Williams rung up 42 items as "hosiery" except for $70 worth of fireworks, which she charged $1 under the code "women's beads."
She was caught after some of her friends set off an alarm at the front door. The friends dropped the items and ran. Officers traced the items back to Williams' register. Video surveillance showed the fraudulent transactions, according to the report.
Williams was charged with grand theft and fraud and could serve up to five years in prison or pay a $5,000 fine, said GPD spokeswoman Summer Hallett.
