Five local women were arrested Thursday morning for offering sex to an undercover police officer.
The women, who range in age from 23 to 49 years old, were arrested between 5:22 a.m. and 7:33 a.m., according to their Gainesville Police Department arrest reports.
GPD Sgt. Robert Bartley, who was a part of the operation, said police were responding to neighborhood complaints about prostitution.
According to the women's arrest reports, they solicited the same officer on Southwest Fifth Avenue, Southwest Second Terrace and South Main Street.
Bartley said the officer didn't coerce the women but simply drove by and was flagged down.
According to their arrest reports, four of the women offered to perform oral sex on the officer for $20, and the other offered sexual intercourse for the same price.
All five denied they were involved in prostitution once they were read their rights, according to the reports.
One woman, Ida Brenanette Miller, 42, initially gave officers a fake name and had two active warrants in Alachua County for cocaine and narcotic equipment possession, her arrest report stated.
Police found a glass crack pipe in the jacket of one of the other women, Tammie L. Weasenforth, 49, during a search, according to the report.
GPD spokeswoman Summer Hallett said prostitution is a problem local police deal with regularly.
"Prostitution is a problem in Gainesville because most of it is fueled by a drug habit," Hallett said. "They can turn a trick and make a couple dollars and get their next fix."
