World of Beer guests buzzed answers into their smartphones Monday for the pub’s first trivia night.

The event was hosted by Jay Anderson, the morning talk show host for The Sky 97.3, from 7-9 p.m. in Newberry’s Tioga Town Center.

Instead of using pen and paper, players downloaded the SpeedQuizzing Smartphone Pub Quiz application and used their smartphones as answer pads, Anderson said.

The answer pads changed depending on the type of questions and allowed competitors to hear sounds and see pictures pertaining to questions.

The application eliminated the possibility of cheating because of its time constraint, said Kerry Brock, the World of Beer general manager.

Players received 15 seconds to respond to most questions — barely enough time to log out of the application and Google an answer, Brock said.

The computer system gave the host the ability to score questions and tell who was in the lead. It also allowed him to award bonus points to players who answered the fastest.

Winners received $25, $15 and $10 gift cards, Brock said.

The pub is aiming to be the type of place where people come for activities, Brock said. Trivia night was something guests requested, he said, so the pub decided to give it a try.

Anderson said the restaurant plans to hold more trivia nights in the future.

“Hopefully after a month we’ll have a lot of folks coming there,” Anderson said. “Hopefully we’ll be doing it for a long, long time.”
