Author and columnist Dan Savage is scheduled to speak at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom tonight at 7 as part of Pride Awareness Month.
Adrian Ogle, executive director of the Pride Student Union, said the organization wanted to bring Savage to campus because his work is relevant to the theme of this year’s Pride Awareness Month, which is “love lawlessly.” The theme is a tribute to friends, family and everyone who has shown members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning community unconditional love and support, he said.
Accent is sponsoring the event, and Savage will be paid $10,000 for the appearance, Ogle said.
After the show there will be a Q-and-A session, which will be moderated.
Ricky Carter, co-director of marketing for Pride Awareness Month, said that Savage is a good role model for the LGBTQ community.
Savage is the author of “Savage Love,” an internationally syndicated column that addresses sex and relationships.
