Congressional candidate urges students to vote

A UF alumnus running for U.S. Congress met with UF students Wednesday to encourage them to vote.

Democratic candidate Ken McGurn, who is running to be a U.S. representative for District 3, asked students if they had voted early in the upcoming election and told them about his own platform at the Reitz Union. He said students should take the opportunity to vote — and vote early — because Election Day can be unpredictable for students.

“I would appreciate their vote, but I really just want them to vote,” he said.

McGurn said his main goals are to make positive changes for military veterans, utilize solar energy and make the first two years of college free for students.

McGurn said despite his political affiliation, he works alongside other parties. His campaign intern, Natalie Cristobal, is a registered Republican but cast her ballot for McGurn.

The UF business sophomore said she was worried about how her values would match up with his policies, but after working on the campaign, she said McGurn was the candidate she wanted to vote for.

Cristobal said because the election is a week away, most of the hard work is done. But she has made more than eight hours worth of phone calls this week.

“Now you just have to sit back and wait,” the 19-year-old said.
