UF renovations of more than $24 million, including a major facelift to Southwest Recreation Center, will be considered today by the Florida Board of Governors.
The board, the State University System's highest governing body, will vote on proposed renovations at UF and 10 other universities during its general meeting at Florida State University.
The project costs are paid by the Capital Improvement Trust Fund, which is funded by statewide student tuition fees of $4.76 per credit hour. The funds are released to Florida's public universities every three to four years, said Bill Edmonds, the board's spokesman.
It takes a while to build up funds and determine where they should go, Edmonds explained.
"We don't want one particular project from one particular university scarfing up all the money," he said.
If the board approves UF's projects, the plans will then need approval by the state Legislature.
UF's proposed $16 million renovation to Southwest Rec is the second-costliest project on the bill, trailing the University of South Florida's more than $20 million plan for a student nutrition center.
Other UF projects include revamping the Flavet Field band shell and the Student Health Care Center.
