Students interested in playing an intramural sport at UF no longer have to sit through congested captain meetings.

This fall, Rec Sports is introducing a new online captains meeting to its Intramural Sports Program. All of the large team sports that require a team captain now have the option to go to the in-person captain meeting or try the new online version.

The new online captain meeting has already been accessed by more than 700 students, said Aaron Hobson, the Intramural Sports Coordinator. The online addition was created to be more conducive to a student’s schedule, Hobson said.

The new online portion has taken more than two and a half months of production and can be accessed through Sakai, the new learning system.

Students who chose to use the online captain meeting are required to watch a two-part video about the general policies of intramural sports and take a quiz on these rules. The captain quiz is good for one academic year, so students don’t need to take it again in the spring.

“We’re not trying to trick them by any means,” Hobson said. “We want to make sure they are educated so they know exactly what they’re prepared for.”

All captains, regardless of whether they are going to the in-person or online captain meeting, are now required to take an online rules quiz for their sport.

Hobson said the  online version has alleviated some of the overcrowded captain meetings by more than 100 students per meeting.

“We’re making some pretty good changes, and a lot of those changes are directly because the students [are] voicing what they would like, and we want to give them what they want,” Hobson said.
