Signs of Life, a UF student-run performance troupe, will merge hip-hop, acting, dancing, video, graffiti and more into an hour-long performance Monday and Tuesday in its new show, "Reaching Through the Static."

The 13-member ensemble worked to unite three hip-hop songs with the theme of connection.

"We want people to realize that not everybody needs to be the same as you in order for you to accept them," said Daniel Flores, co-director for the group.

Each member contributed to the storyline through improvisational exercises that were later refined into short sketches.

Flores said the group dissects and performs a new theme each semester.

Ryan Ruby, a fine arts senior and group member, said Signs of Life promotes hip-hop music because the lyrics have a way of bringing people together, regardless of skin color.

"I love that hip-hop is about speaking your mind and doing it in such a way that you are coaxing people's ears into hearing what you have to say," Ruby said.

The group will perform "Reaching Through the Static" Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. in room G-15 of the Constans Theatre.
