City approves contest to redesign overpass

The overpass that stretches across Southwest 13th Street near Archer Road could be renovated with a design contest being launched in January.

The city has approved a contest to redesign the overpass, which is used by pedestrians and cyclists, in an effort to improve its looks and accessibility, said Anthony Lyons, manager of the Community Redevelopment Agency.

The bridge is currently topped with a chain-linked cage for safety reasons.

Users must also travel several blocks out of the way or cross congested roads to access it.

Lyons said the contest is a chance to enhance the area, which he said serves as a gateway to the university and Shands at UF.

Once the contest begins in January, officials expect the selection process to take two to three months, he said. Construction should begin in late 2009 to early 2010.

The winner of the contest will be contracted to do the full design.
