Starting in March, Gainesville residents can hit the court.
The city’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department announced four new co-ed sports leagues Monday.
The department will offer five-on-five and three-on-three basketball, along with competitive and recreational volleyball, according to a press release.
Each league is available to anyone 18 years or older, and five-on-five basketball also has a division for individuals 35 years or older.
Shane Wilson, a 22-year-old UF political science senior, currently plays on an intramural basketball team.
Wilson said the new leagues offer several advantages over intramurals.
“Intramural leagues are often unorganized, and the season is just too short,” he said. “I’d definitely be interested in something a little more formal and organized.”
The Martin Luther King Jr. Multipurpose Center, situated at 1028 NE 14th St., will host games once or twice a week in the evening.
Teams can register Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Building B of the Thomas Center, located at 306 NE Sixth Ave.
Michelle Weydert, the athletics program coordinator, said PRCA has been limited to offering co-ed and men’s softball in recent years.
In addition to the new programs, the city plans to offer even more options in the future, Weydert said.
“We’re trying to open up more sports opportunities for those interested adults in the community,” she said.
