Former UF employee arrested for molesting child

A former UF engineering employee was arrested Sept. 29 after police say he molested a 9-year-old girl last year.

David Blankenship, 53, was arrested in Washington County after a warrant was issued from the state attorney's office, according to a release.

On April 15, the victim came to Alachua police and said Blankenship molested her in 2008, though she was not able to give them an exact date, according to the release.

The girl told police he entered her room, touched her genitals under her clothes and penetrated her with his fingers, according to a police report.

The report did not include the reason Blankenship was in the girl's room.

Blankenship was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation. His bail has been posted at $100,000, according to the release.

Blankenship worked at UF as a photographer in the College of Engineering News and Publications office from September 1980 until July 2008, UF spokesman Steve Orlando said.

Orlando had no further comment on the investigation.
