Gainesville Police arrested a Georgia man after he led an officer in a high-speed chase Thursday.

At about 10 p.m., Jevon Maurice Graham, 39, sped westbound on West University Avenue at more than 70 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to a police report. Graham passed slower-moving cars over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, causing cars near him to swerve to avoid being hit.

In the 6800 block of W. Newberry Road, Graham tried to turn into The Oaks Mall and struck a curb, nearly hitting a telephone pole and bushes, according to the report. He then kept driving through the mall parking lot, making his way back onto West Newberry Road going eastbound.

The GPD officer then bumped the back of the car in an attempt to stop the chase, according to the report. Graham’s car swung back and forth, but Graham regained control, turning around before hitting a car at 4800 W. Newberry Road.

After hitting the car, Graham kept trying to drive away, according to the report. The officer then used the pushbar, the grille on the front of his car, to pin the car into the center median. Graham fled on foot before he tripped and fell in a parking lot near Gainesville Health and Fitness, allowing the officer to arrest him.

He was arrested on charges of fleeing a police officer and reckless driving. He was released from the Alachua County Jail on Sunday on a $10,000 bond and could not be reached for comment.
