Here, children rarely go to school. Backpacks, pencils and books are scarce, just as scarce as the buildings that provide an education to growing minds. Here, they bear guns and ammunition and fight a war.
Invisible Children is a nonprofit organization founded in 2003 that works to raise awareness of the war in Uganda and raise money to help get children out of battle and back into classrooms.
The UF chapter of Invisible Children is partnering with Heal the World to host a benefit concert Wednesday at Rum Runners. All the money raised will go directly to the Invisible Children Legacy Scholarship Fund.
The Legacy Scholarship Fund gives children in Uganda the opportunity to get a high school education.
Belinda Smith, the chapter’s president, said each chapter of Invisible Children has a sister school in Uganda. The money raised will go toward rebuilding and maintaining that specific school. The organization also helps the children outside the classroom.
“We pair them up with mentors to help them academically and socially because of the tragedy that most of them have gone through,” Smith said.
