An unwritten law has moved the UF administration to cancel an indie-rock concert because it was scheduled during exam week.

Reitz Union Board Entertainment president Kristen Huff released a statement on Facebook to explain the cancellation to the more than 700 people who confirmed they would be attending.

“In this case, the band did confirm, and we had no reason to think there would be a problem on our end because there never has been before,” Huff wrote. “We are deeply saddened to make this announcement and cancel a show we’ve already announced.”

RUB has been in negotiations with Band of Horses since December.

“It was really heartbreaking for us,” said Bailey Parke, a RUB Entertainment Bands Committee co-director. “We had something we really cared about taken away from us.”

After hearing the administration wanted to cancel the concert, Huff and RUB graduate adviser, Sarah Welch, appealed the decision to the Division of Student Affairs, but the two made no progress.

RUB is working to find another band to perform on either April 22 or 23 by using the leftover budget from the canceled concert but hasn’t submitted any official offers yet. Band of Horses was going to be paid $11,000 for performing.
