Florida didn’t have a single five-star recruit for 2019, but a new transfer might just make up for it.
Linebacker Brenton Cox, who was ranked as a five-star before attending the University of Georgia, has enrolled at UF. The Gators’ once-rival entered the transfer portal earlier in the week and visited the campus on Thursday. Unless Cox can earn a transfer waiver, the sophomore will likely have to sit out a year before he can play.
Cox played in 13 of Georgia’s 14 games last year, where he recorded 20 total tackles, two tackles for loss and three pass breakups, the last of which was good for third most on the team.
Cox, along with teammate Robert Beal, was cited on April 2 for possession of Marijuana by UGA campus police. Cox’s transfer comes after his reported dismissal from the team at the beginning of training camp, which UGA coaches declined to comment on.
UF’s linebacker corps could benefit from the new addition, as Cox will bring even more depth to a group of young players by the time he is eligible to take the field next year.
