A man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon, marking the third incident of gun violence in Gainesville in less than four days.
At 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to 100 NE 22nd St., following a report of an unconscious Black man found on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a press release.
The man was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries, the press release read. The victim’s identity is under investigation, GPD Sgt. Shelley Postle said.
Just two days before, four people were shot at 500 SW Second Ave. near The Gator Store.
The victims and suspects, known to each other, got into a fight in a downtown Gainesville parking garage. When the victims walked away from the garage, the suspects drove up in a dark-colored sedan and shot the victims, according to the release.
Officers used trauma kits to apply first aid while waiting for Emergency Medical services to arrive. The four victims were transported to the hospital for surgery, GPD Lt. Steven Bradford said, and they survived non-life-threatening injuries.
On Friday, officers responded to another drive-by shooting at Sweetwater Square Apartments at 3101 NE 15th St. Police received multiple calls that shots were being fired in the area, and investigation revealed that several gunshots were fired from a vehicle, the press release wrote.
Police have reason to believe the Nov. 4 shooting may be related to a large physical fight at Citizens Field— a shared field for local high school sports teams.
“There was a high school football game that night at Citizens Field prior to the shooting,” Postle said. “It’s believed to have been a roll-over from that.”
