If you've heard a sound similar to a horn recently in Turlington Plaza, it's probably Jeffrey Kaplan with his shofar.
UF Hillel will be hosting a series of events and services to celebrate Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, which begins today and will end at sunset on Friday.
Kaplan, program director at Hillel, will be organizing a series of shofar flash mobs this year and is aiming for about 300 people to attend and blow mini shofars, or ram horns, to remind students the High Holidays are here.
On Tuesday there were three flash mobs on the Plaza of the Americas. Today there will be another flash mob at Turlington Plaza at 12:40 p.m.
Kaplan has been in Turlington Plaza for the past week handing out toy shofars to passers-by. Kaplan said the shofar has been used in the Jewish culture for centuries as a call of worship.
"What I'm doing goes back thousands of years," he said.
Kaplan said Rosh Hashana is a day of introspection and a day for asking for forgiveness.
