The 2008 presidential election was a milestone in more ways than one.
I will remember many moments from this historic election, but not all of them will be as fond as I would like.
Seconds after Barack Obama was announced the winner, countless status updates appeared on my Facebook all at once. A lot of them were joyous cries of victory while others left me feeling disgusted and ashamed. I just couldn't believe some of the things my friends were saying.
Their remarks were inappropriate, ignorant and embarrassing.
One friend's status said they were "seeing the failure of the republic. Hitler gave good speeches too. If you voted for Obama, congrats, you've betrayed the constitution for a handout."
What I'm most afraid of is that I won't be the only one experiencing this. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who have had to read similar things.
Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. I believe in the First Amendment, but this is ridiculous. There is no need for the tasteless things said. I don't think people realize the impact their words have and how permanent they are once they're on the Web.
Hopefully, we will all lay down our differences and come through this as a nation ready to work together for change.
