Attention HvZ junkies: The rules have changed.
New regulations on Humans versus Zombies will restrict time and the locations where the game may be played.
"HvZ," as it's known, which hosts games with hundreds of UF student participants, was informed July 5 by the University Police Department they will have to follow some new regulations if they want to continue playing on campus, said Rebecca Foster, president of the organization.
The new regulations state all players must be clearly identifiable, Nerf guns must now be painted orange, play time is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and only UF students are permitted to play. Players must also sign a waiver, and some areas are now off-limits for playing. UPD Lt. William Gainey, the liaison to HvZ, said the new regulations were created to distinguish those who are playing from a student going to class.
"Student organizers have gone out of their way to prevent problems," Gainey said. "There has been a lot of planning to allow students to do this."
Foster said she was able to negotiate with UPD and find common ground, which is that all players must wear a T-shirt with a brightly colored "HvZ" on the front to indicate they are playing.
Foster said she doesn't think the new regulations will affect the numbers of participants. She said games typically have between 600 and 1,100 players.
HvZ will hold a summer game July 20-24 on UF's campus.
