Coming into the weekend, Florida’s only loss of the season was against Baylor. On Friday that defeat was avenged.
The No. 11 Gators men’s tennis team defeated No. 6 Baylor 4-2 in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
In doubles, the No. 2 and No. 3 courts split their sets, leaving their crucial doubles point to No. 10 Antoine Benneteau and Alexandre Lacroix on the No. 1 court.
Benneteau and Lacroix delivered the point in a tiebreaker set.
Up 1-0, UF needed to win 3 singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals.
The match was tied at 2-2 before Florida clinched the victory by winning on courts No. 5 and No. 6.
Freshmen Sekou Bangoura Jr. and Nassim Slilam were both pushed to three sets in their victories.
No. 7 Alexandre Lacroix was in the third set of his match on court No. 1 when play was abandoned upon Florida’s 4-2 victory.
The Gators (5-1) face No. 9 Ohio State today at 9 a.m.
The No. 4 Gators women’s tennis team remained perfect with a 5-2 victory over No. 16 Michigan at the ITA Team Indoor Tournament in Madison, Wis.
Florida began the match winning all 3 doubles sets.
With the doubles point secured, senior Anastasia Revzina and freshman Allie Will won the first two singles matches from courts No. 4 and No. 2. Sophomore Claire Bartlett ensured the Florida victory in a three-set win on court No. 6.
After the win was clinched, two Gators stumbled as the singles matches were played out.
No. 15 Lauren Embree was upset by No. 36 Denise Muresan 6-7, 6-0, 7-6 on court No. 1.
The loss is Embree’s first of the season.
SEC Freshman of the Week Caroline Hitimana lost her tiebreaker set after splitting the initial sets 6-1, 4-6.
UF (7-0) faces defending team indoor champion Northwestern tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
