Homework, book-buying and class-rearranging usually initiate the new school year.

But this year at UF, casino games, musical performances, bowling and free food are also part of the mix.

The Reitz Union is welcoming back students this week with a free open house. Different activities will be offered through Thursday, and Reitz Union Board Entertainment will offer music, comedy and movie events each night.

The events will promote the businesses, programs and services in the student union, said Emily Davis, Reitz Union marketing coordinator.

"So many people come to the Reitz Union for so many things, but they don't necessarily know all the services," Davis said.

UF English freshman Zack Peterson plans to attend the free weekly event GatorNights! on Friday, which will feature about 10 activities and events instead of the usual two or three.

Peterson said he is interested in seeing a movie and meeting new people.

Anyone can attend the open house. Students are required to bring their Gator 1 Cards for free access to GatorNights!
