Grand jury indicts Gainesville man for first-degree murder

A Gainesville man was indicted for first-degree murder by an Alachua County grand jury Monday.

Corey Bernard Pryor, 38, who is charged with the killing of Vearl Ingram, was also indicted for possession of a firearm by a violent career criminal and five counts of tampering with physical evidence, according documents from the local State Attorney's Office.

If found guilty, the minimum sentence Pryor would receive is life in prison, State Attorney's Office spokesman Spencer Mann said.

"There is the possibility of seeking the death penalty," he said, but State Attorney Bill Cervone has not decided whether to pursue it.

Pryor was arrested March 22 in connection with a March 18 shooting at Madison Pointe Apartments on Northwest 23rd Boulevard.

Pryor's neighbor said he came home and saw Pryor and Ingram in a verbal argument in front of an apartment, according to Pryor's Gainesville Police Department arrest report.

According to the report, the neighbor saw Pryor first pull out a handgun, and then he saw Ingram throw a beer bottle at Pryor and lunge for the gun.

The neighbor said during a struggle for the gun, between three and five shots were fired and Ingram fell to the ground bleeding, according to the report. Pryor then loaded Ingram's body into the back seat of his pickup truck and drove away.

Police later arrested Bruce R. Davis, who was driving Pryor's truck. Davis told police he knew about the killing and that he and Ingram worked for Pryor, according to the report.
