The Student Government at Santa Fe College is hosting a kickoff event Tuesday to promote its campaign for better bus access for students.
The Start the Bus! Rally will be held in the Oak Grove at SFC’s Northwest Campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free food, a DJ and T-shirts.
Start the Bus!, an initiative that began about four or five years ago, is a student-run campaign to lobby in Tallahassee for state community colleges to have the right to collect a transportation fee from students.
The fee will be a little less than $3 per student per credit hour, and the students could have the same bus access as students at state universities.
People who go to state universities show their IDs and get on the bus for free, while students attending state colleges pay 75 cents for bus fare.
Samuel A. Morris Jr., press secretary for SFC’s Student Government, said this is the first campuswide event the students have hosted this year, but they hope it will serve as a model for other state colleges to follow.
