The Union Street Farmers' Market will open Wednesday at its new location in the Downtown Community Plaza.
The market will still be open at its normal hours, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays.
Market Director Charlie Lybrand said the market is moving to the plaza, at East University Avenue and Southeast First Street, because it has outgrown its space at the Sun Center. It first opened there more than 11 years ago.
"The market needs room to grow," he said. "We will have that at the plaza."
One or two new booths will open this Wednesday, he said, but there is potential for more.
He expects more booths to attract more customers.
"The more you have to offer, the more people come down to check it out," Lybrand said.
When the market first started, he said, there were eight booths and about 100 customers.
Now, on a good-weather day, it attracts between 30 and 40 booths and up to 2,000 customers.
Vendors sell in-season produce, crafts and baked goods.
Lybrand said he hopes parking will be better at the new location because of its proximity to the downtown parking garage.
The market will not need to change its name because the move will actually bring it into the old Union Street district, he said.
