Residents in the area surrounding Southwest 20th Avenue could choose to become a part of Gainesville in a referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot.
The area, east of Interstate 75 and north of Butler Plaza, is currently part of unincorporated Alachua County.
It is almost completely surrounded by the city.
Annexation would make residents eligible to vote in City Commission elections and subject to city-based taxes.
It would also eliminate a surcharge on bills from Gainesville Regional Utilities and make the area primarily under the jurisdiction of Gainesville Police.
