This semester UF switched its online course system from WebCT to a system called E-Learning System.
Douglas Johnson, manager of E-Learning support services, said UF made the switch to upgrade the hardware, called Vista, which was going out of service.
UF also wanted to disassociate with the name "Vista" because of the growing problems with Microsoft Vista, he said.
The license required to run the program cost about ,169,000 a year, which includes system upgrade costs, Johnson said. With the staffing expenses, it costs about ,1 million a year to run the E-Learning System at UF.
The biggest change that comes with E-Learning is the graphical layout of the system, Johnson added.
"It's been based on a lot of user studies done by WebCT to try and create a system that's easier for users to figure out what they need to do," he said.
Some new tools and features were also added with E-Learning, such as blog and profile options that make it easier to network with students and instructors, Johnson said.
