After the No. 5 Gators women’s swimming team routed the Vanderbilt Commodores with a 193-69 victory on Thursday, the team traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota to meet with the UF men’s squad to take on No. 9 Minnesota on Saturday for a dual-competition.
Last season the Florida men’s team defeated Minnesota 167-125. However, when the women’s squad competed against Minnesota, they lost by a score of 183-117.
The outcome this year was no different for the men as they won 174.50 to 125.50, behind the efforts of junior Jack Blyzinskyj in the 100-yard backstroke and freshman diver Samuel Smith.
Sophomore Caeleb Dressel also contributed by hitting the “B” cut in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in second behind Blyzinskyj.
For the women’s squad, the meet ended in a 150-150 tie. Senior Natalie Hinds hit the “B” cut in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 22.85 en route to a first place finish.
Florida swept the top four spots in the 200-yard backstroke, with redshirt sophomore Georgia Hohmann placing first with a time of 1:58.17 ahead of senior Ashlee Linn, freshman Sydney Sell and junior Alyssa Yambor-Maul.
Senior diver Emily Mosher became the fourth Gator diver this year to have a qualifying standard. She took fifth in the 3-meter dive competition.
After their performances in Minnesota, UF’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams added three swimmers to their list of NCAA Division 1 “B” standard qualifiers, and four divers posted new qualifying standard.
Both of UF’s teams will now face another dual-competition Friday and Saturday as they take on Texas and Indiana in Austin, Texas.
